The History of Pilates: From Joseph Pilates to Bristol’s Own Studio

Discover the roots of classical Pilates and how it found a home in the heart of Bristol.

Classical Pilates is more than a workout trend; it’s a method grounded in over a century of thoughtful movement, discipline, and innovation. But where did it begin, and how did this transformative practice arrive here in Bristol?

Let’s take a journey back to the beginning.

Meet Joseph Pilates: The Man Behind the Method

Born in Germany in 1883, Joseph Pilates was a visionary long before the wellness movement took off. As a child, he battled asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever — challenges that fueled his obsession with physical health and the body’s potential.

Drawing on influences from gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, and even animal movement, Joseph created a system of exercises he called “Contrology” — the art of consciously controlling every movement. It wasn’t just about strength or flexibility. It was about precision, breath, alignment, and the mind-body connection.

During World War I, while interned in a camp in England, Joseph began training fellow internees using his evolving method. Using makeshift equipment (including bed springs — the inspiration behind the Reformer!), he helped people regain strength, mobility, and resilience.

From New York to the World

In the 1920s, Joseph moved to New York City with his wife, Clara, where they opened their first studio. It quickly gained a cult following — particularly among dancers, performers, and athletes — who praised the method for its ability to build strength without bulk and prevent injury.

Joseph Pilates taught until his death in 1967, and his students — known today as the “Pilates Elders” — continued his legacy, passing the method on through generations.

What Is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates stays true to Joseph’s original method. It follows a structured sequence of exercises using mat work and apparatus like the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and more, staying faithful to his teachings in both form and philosophy.

At Pilates 100 Bristol, we proudly teach Classical Pilates because we believe in the depth, clarity, and transformative power of the method — just as Joseph intended. While Pilates has evolved in many directions over the years, classical studios like ours preserve the essence of the work, honoring its roots while making it relevant for every body, at every age.
