WHAT IS CLASSICAL PILATES?
Classical Pilates is an exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago. It is proven to reshape and tone the body without causing stress and imbalance.
Our teachers were all trained at Pi Pilates Studios London, under Holly Murray. Holly was amongst the first in the UK to offer Classical Pilates after completing her training with Romana Kryzanowska in 2003.
During his lifetime (1883 - 1967), Joseph Pilates developed a very specific series of progressive exercises which were designed to work the entire body. By building strength, endurance, flexibility and core integrity the exercises help correct muscle imbalance, improve co-ordination and correct posture.
The principles of The Pilates Method
The exercises aim to attain the correct balance between strength, flexibility and control. They are based on six key principles:
Breath
Concentration
Control
Precision
Centre
Flow
How does it work?
The exercises are designed to work the entire body with balanced and even development of muscles. They focus on the small core muscles - abdomen, lower back & pelvic area - and the integration of these with the large muscle groups more distally. Joseph Pilates believed that the success of exercise came from a thorough analysis of the body, then controlled work rather than mindless repetitive movement.
Who is it for?
Classical pilates is a fantastic discipline for anyone and everyone to learn. It is suitable for any age and any level of fitness be it starting or returning to exercise, competing at an elite level in sport, recovering from injury, or during and after pregnancy. It teaches you to take what you learn in the studio into your everyday life so that it becomes part of your way of living. Pilates is not something done to you, it is something you do for yourselves.
“Contrology (Pilates) is complete co-ordination of body, mind and spirit”
“The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power”
